Senior Platform Engineer - IoT/Telemetry (f/m/d)

Your Mission

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you take technical ownership of our industrial telemetry path: from the OPC UA client on the Linux-based edge gateway, through MQTT and cloud ingestion, to the appropriate storage and provisioning of the data. Your initial focus is on taking over, stabilizing, and reliably operating the existing system. Building on this, you will develop reusable platform components, clear data contracts, and stable interfaces. You will work closely with Automation Engineering — without being responsible for PLC/DCS programming or automation logic yourself.

Your Tasks

• Taking over, stabilizing, and operating the existing gateway-to-cloud telemetry path

• Lifecycle management of Linux-based industrial gateways, including connectivity, security, monitoring, maintenance, and recovery

• Developing OPC UA client and collector services, and transforming data into versioned MQTT topics and payloads

• Building robust transmission and deployment processes with reconnect, retry, buffering, store-and-forward, idempotency, controlled replay, as well as safe rollout and rollback

• Developing cloud-side ingestion and processing, and selecting and operating a suitable telemetry storage solution

• Ensuring end-to-end observability, testing, and runbooks, and designing stable APIs and data contracts

• Technical collaboration with Automation Engineering and external partners on contract changes, integration tests, incidents, and handovers

What You Bring

• Several years of experience in backend or platform engineering with a production-grade technology stack

• Proven end-to-end experience with distributed systems — from design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and incident response

• Hands-on experience with MQTT or comparable messaging technologies, as well as with event-driven architecture and reliability patterns

• Knowledge of Linux-based edge environments and reproducible, containerized deployments

• Cloud and DevOps experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, access control, monitoring, and telemetry storage

• Confidence in designing APIs and data contracts, along with solid testing practices

• Strong communication skills in business-fluent English and enjoyment of collaborating across software, automation, and operations boundaries

• Practical experience with OPC UA in production environments, with time-series databases and telemetry retention strategies, and a confident command of AWS IoT Core or comparable managed IoT platforms is an advantage
